Jorge Garcés participates in the event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Prince of Asturias

  • 11/02/2025

The event took place today, 11th February, in the auditorium at Endesa’s headquarters, with the closing ceremony presided over by His Majesty the King.

Professor Garcés Ferrer is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Institute for Research on Social Welfare Policies (Polibienestar) that he directs at the University of Valencia. A professor at the University of Valencia, he held the Prince Felipe Chair at Georgetown University in Washington DC (USA) during the 2014, 2015 and 2016 academic years, a chair that the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport periodically announces in a competitive public tender within the framework of the agreement signed with Georgetown University, the Spanish Embassy in the USA. and the Endesa Foundation. The Prince of Asturias Chair at Georgetown University was created in 1999 in honour of HRH Prince Felipe of Bourbon and Greece, the current King Felipe VI of Spain, who completed his postgraduate studies at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. See video

Professor Garcés was chosen by a mixed selection committee made up of the Vice-Chancellors of Spanish universities, members of Georgetown University, members of the Ministry of Universities and representatives of the Endesa Foundation. During the three years he held the Prince of Asturias Chair, Professor Garcés carried out teaching and research activities with the aim of contributing to the promotion and dissemination of studies on Spain and Europe in the field of Comparative European Social Policies, also assuming the institutional representation of the Chair before organisations and personalities from the academic, scientific, economic, social and diplomatic world in the USA. Thus, and with this holistic vision of contributing to the dissemination and promotion of Spanish university science and research, Professor Garcés held bilateral meetings between the Prince of Asturias Chair and various international institutions located in Washington DC, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Organization of American States, the Pan American Health Organization and the Delegation of the European Commission in the USA. In the same vein, he collaborated and continues to collaborate with prestigious American think tanks such as Brookings, the Wilson Center, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Professor Garcés’ work with the Spanish Embassy in Washington DC in promoting and consolidating the first Association of Spanish Scientists in the USA (ECUSA) deserves a special mention. Together with this scientific association, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Spanish Embassy, the Prince of Asturias Chair organised the ‘First Congress of Spanish Scientists in the USA’ in September 2015, with the sponsorship of the Ramón Areces Foundation, the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation and the Endesa Foundation, with the presidency of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain.

Since its creation in 1999, in addition to Jorge Garcés Ferrer, this chair has been held by prominent academics such as Josep María Colomer, Natividad Fernández Sola and Juan Luis Manfredi, who have contributed to spreading a more complete and diverse image of the Spanish reality in the international context.

Jorge Garcés emphasises that ‘The role of the Prince of Asturias Chair is fundamental for the creation of academic and scientific bridges between Spain and the United States. Today more than ever we have to create links between countries with a view to improving society. We have to rely on ICT and artificial intelligence, of course, but we must not leave people behind. The social aspect must be the backbone of everything: education, research, politics and the economy. This year Polibienestar celebrates its 15th anniversary and all the events we are going to hold will bear this message in mind so that we do not lose sight of it.’
