Valencian research institute Polibienestar exceeds 80 million euros of European funding in social sciences

  • 24/05/2024

The University Institute for Research in Social Welfare Policies, Polibienestar, of the University of Valencia, has exceeded 80 million euros in funding in the last ten years. This figure corresponds to the more than 100 European research projects it has worked on during this time.

Polibienestar is a leading institute in the area of social sciences. Throughout its history since 2009, the institute has participated globally in more than 100 research projects at European level with a total income of 87 million euros.

The realisation of these projects has been made possible by two fundamental factors. On the one hand, the institute’s strong network of international partners. This has made it possible not only to obtain international funding for research, but also to expand new lines of research and incorporate advanced technologies for the analysis and implementation of public policies. And, on the other hand, the commitment and excellence of its staff. At present, the institute has a team of 137 highly qualified national and international scientists and professionals, of whom 12 are professors and leaders in their fields of knowledge, including political science, sociology, architecture, social work, psychology, journalism, economics, and law, all with outstanding academic and research records, and 47 researchers are juniors, reflecting the institute’s commitment to young talent, who represent the future of research and are in constant training and development. This interdisciplinary and socio-technical perspective of Polibienestar attracts young researchers from different areas of knowledge, bringing a fresh and renewed vision to social science research in health, sustainability and governance or education with a high commitment to training and developing their interdisciplinary talent.

This diverse and highly skilled team is the driving force that propels the institute towards new horizons, ensuring the quality and relevance of its research.

Commitment to social welfare

At the head of this research institute is Professor Jorge Garcés, who holds a PhD in Political Science and Administration, a PhD in Social Psychology and a degree in Philosophy and Educational Sciences (specialising in psychology), a diploma in Criminology and a diploma in Social Work. His aim with this Institute for Social Welfare Policy Research is to reaffirm his commitment to the creation of evidence-based policies that promote social welfare and social equity. As the professor explains, after many years of achievements, “Polibiienestar looks to the future with the determination to continue to be a fundamental pillar in the field of public policy and the transfer of social welfare”.
